New Balance FuelCell Supercomp Elite v5
- Fit Women's-specific, runs small
- Ride Light and bouncy
- Plate Carbon plate
- Run Type Marathon racing
A lightweight women's racer built for marathon-day bounce and comfort.
The Supercomp Elite v5 is the shoe we reach for when the goal is a marathon, not a mile repeat. The FuelCell foam feels soft and springy underfoot, and the carbon plate keeps the forefoot from folding away at toe-off. It has a more forgiving personality than the Metaspeed, which makes it easier to live with over 26.2.
The upper is light and breathable, and the heel hold is secure without a lot of bulk. We liked the way the shoe disappeared on long efforts; there's enough cushioning to protect the legs, but the ride stays lively. The bounce is most obvious at moderate-to-fast paces, not when you're shuffling through the first mile.
Sizing is the main caution. This one runs small, and the fit is a little narrow through the midfoot. We suggest going up a half size if you're between sizes or have a wider foot. The upside is a race-day shoe that feels quick and comfortable rather than brutally stiff.
Bottom Line
This is the women's marathon racer we point to for a forgiving, bouncy ride; size up if you're between sizes.
